Any Rancid tutorial?

Fri May 11, 2012 6:18 pm

Hello.

Would you please recommend a good Rancid tutorial?

Did you learn using the links in the official webpage(very confusing)?

Thanks.

I used this one (which is from the site):

http://www.shrubbery.net/rancid/RhysEva ... ew_0.3.pdf

The first time I followed it, my Rancid install didn't work. The second and third time I made sure to install it using the exact versions it specifies. What sucks about it is that there's 100's of software you have to install to make it work which introduces lots of moving parts (ok, I'm exaggerating by saying 100's),...but in the end it worked.

I just build a rancid server a few weeks ago, so it's still pretty fresh, also installed CVSweb
so if you run into any sticking points post up.

Hi Guys, I don't know if this is the right discussion. But i have rancid installed and working. but i am a little concerned bout the .clogin.rc file as it stores all the password and usernames for the devices wouldn't this be a security problem. is there any way to enter the encrypted passwords or lock file itself from opening for others or any security option to avoid this.

Your RANCID box in theory has access to all network devices and so you'd make it a secure resource for the very reasons you're concerned.

You'd most likely be using a remote authentication process (LDAP) to access things on a daily basis and then a local username and password for edge cases or emergencies. In this case the password would be encrypted with an MD5 hash rather than the Type 7 encryption.
