It'll be like most things. Practice makes perfect.

You'll get used to it and I've seen people that don't use the number pad when typing IPs.

I was thinking about the months ago. I'm so used to entering IP's via the numpad as all the numbers and the period is all there. With IPv6 you have a-f and the damn colon.

There is already a patent out there which was created years ago. But no devices! It could simply be a usb or wireless pad sitting next to the keyboard, but nothing yet.

One hand for letters, one hand for numbers then remap one of the keys on the keypad to a colon.

I almost never use a number pad because I'm always on a laptop. My laptop has one of those little macro number pad things but I don't even know how to use it. After typing thousands upon thousands of IPs I'm pretty damned quick at it now. I'm getting pretty quick at IPv6 too, it's just a matter of doing it a lot I think.

I already have a HEX keyboard. It's a standard 102 key with ABCDEF on the main area and with two sets of numbers 1-0 above the main area and a separate number pad in a 3x3 configuration to the right of the main area of keys. The only down side is that the numbers and keys A-F are not immediately together. The plus side of course is that I know where A-F are without looking.

I can't live without my numpad. Even my Thinkpad E520 has one :)
