Check out this site tool, practice subnetting. It presents a completely random problem with the option to view the answer and the work.

Assuming the usual convention specify the IP address of the default gateway in the 20th subnet from the address 172.16.0.0 which has been subnetted to allow for 40 subnets.

i dont get understand how this is done !! sorry if this is annoying but for the life of me i just dont get it !!

trick question, any useable ip address in the 20th subnet could be the default gateway.

btw, that network cant be subnetted to allow for 40 subnets, it'd either be 32 or 64 subnets,
stick with the powers of 2, and you'll catch on.

How did you come up with this IP address?

I got this range for 20th 172.16.76.0 - 172.16.79.255

Mask 255.255.252.0

this would be this highest usable ip address in the 21st subnet 172.16.80.0/22
unless someone started counting at zero. then it'd be the 20th subnet

I'm several days late and dollars short here, but has the OP seen this? Step through it as they "show work", and it's VERY helpful...
