I don't think IPv6 is going to stay unless they make a translation from hex to decimal so that configuration will be easier.(some wacky translation code for the IOS or something like that) That's why every year for the last 10 years every dude that learned it said that tomorrow everybody will use them. And nobody uses them.
Admins want to get things done and IPv6 asks of you to have the skills of math professor to ping a damn host :) Also most admins know by heart their subnets , their vlans , their gateways. Not knowing them , even if they are well documented is a security risk in itself. If you have to research 100 pages of documentation to find where the hell is a firewall you're screwed :p

#do sh cdp nei detail

(abbreviated) .. (*&(LJK:&*^@#:()I*WE)"(IWEPP:MDO):littlecow

do ping (*&(LJK:&*^@#:()I*WE)"(IWEPP:MDO):little:cow

:)))

In addition to RFC's I have read the following for reference...
DNS and BIND on IPv6 as a supplement book to DNS and BIND 5th Ed.
IPv6 for Enterprise Networks
IPv6 Essentials
Planning for IPv6
BGP Design and Implementation - There is an example towards the end of the book of what a dual-stack is and how to do it.
There is also some coverage in the CCNP ROUTE OCG

I'm trying to read IPV6 essentials at the moment but finding it very hard going.

Hurricane Electric have some useful (and free) hands-on training courses. See http://www.tunnelbroker.net. They still owe me a sage T-shirt though...

unfortunately those of us that work for the US government are mandated to go IPv6 this year.
so were heading full steam with ipv6 deployment to meet that mandate.

We have clients that fall under this as well which was why we pushed on it early last year.

I am in the same boat. The only saving grace for me is I only need to worry about my routers, switches, and firewalls. Once I have the routing done the server team has to do all the heavy lifting.

The mandate doesn't apply to all of the "US Government", it applies to the executive branch. The OMB mandate has no jurisdiction/power over the Legislative or Judicial branches. They may choose to follow, but are not required.

Id love to get exposure to an IPv6 migration or project but with my current job (DoE) Im actually glade I dont run an outward facing network. IPv6 is a project that I dont see coming anytime soon.

2014 is the deadline for internal systems to run IPv6. So you will see it showing up sooner or later.

It's wrong, and it's wrong in a lot of places.

This is a US Civics 201 kind of thing. The OMB is an executive branch office, it does not have authority over the Judicial or Legislative branches for these kinds of matters. They like to say it's ALL of the US Govt, because the executive branch is (guessing) 95+% of the US Government, but it's not all.

If you go look at the org chart for the OMB, you won't find the Legislative or Judicial branches in there; it's the whole separation of powers thing....
