I can't believe I'm seeing myself type that, but I'm going to call a the operations manager of a company that I spoke with on the phone today to decline a network analyst interview next Tuesday. It's just to far of a commute, a total of 3 hours a day sitting behind the wheel. sigh.

It would be a good opportunity, but it's just to far to drive every day. It's a position with the International Justice and Public Safety network. They are the backbone info-structure to the local and federal law enforcement agencies of the United States of America. From speeking with the Opperations manager the job's a cross between a NOC and help desk. Monitor Orion, take some support calls, create tickets. Starting pay is $40k-$43k night shift with crazy benefits, just need to pas an FBI background test and have my CCNA in 6 months. Oh well..

Understandable. A three-hour commute is a huge time sink.

Kinda feels bad, but with any luck I'll take it as a boost of confidence and just keep it going..

Thats rough man having to turn it down. I do about 2 hours of commuting every day but it's on the train which gives me time to read. Most of my CCIE studies is done on the train.

I would have accepted the offer. You don't have to spend years on that job.

If you got one, you know you can get others. Keep looking and the position that's just right will show up.

I know it is too late at this point, but in the future why not take the interview to get that experience? You'd want to be honest with them that you've got some serious concerns about the commute, etc... But in my experience every interview - both good and bad - has been a good learning opportunity.

We discussed this on the phone, he's grew up in this town apparently. We were both on the same page..

I know the commute sucks because I commute from San Diego to Orange County everyday which is about 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic. The opportunity was one I could not pass up so even though the commute is not fun, and if the job gives you good experience I might think twice about it. You can even do it for a few months to get the experience then look for something closer especially if you are currently not employed. Good luck though.

Kudos on saying no. 3 hour commute with a young child at home? no way. Did you at least try and negotiate a higher salary and/or travel expenses? Good practice if nothing else.

I'm in pretty much the same boat.

I dont want to bitch too much but, I want to move. I am not sure it is the right thing to do since I have a CCNA and 3 months experience so far working at a NOC on my way to a ccnp... Im not even sure I would get anywhere moving somewhere else without a ton of experience. Just getting nowhere in Pittsburgh :(

Ok, is the time you spend traveling to your job. Thanks google.

Its a lot of time, but with no experience worse is nothing.

Less QQ and more pew pew.

Reading, labbing, reading, labbing. Experience will follow if you're looking for it.
