OK guys, I had this question ask of me last night. A good friend of mine had bought on ebay a couple lightweight 1141s because he had read that you could convert them to autonomous APs. I told him something didn't seem right and that I wouldn't do it. Well he did convert them and I guess he has been running one at home for a while now. He calls me last night and tells me that the 1141 that he converted and is using is getting pretty warm and wanted to know if this was normal. Well I don't know if it is because I don't try to convert LAPs to autonomous APs. Has anyone did this and what have they found out? Is it safe to run them a little hot or does it cause problems? Any input would be wonderful. Thanks in advanced guys.

I never thought one could convert LAP's to regular AP's, I know the reverse is possible, the reason I though this was that the hardware is different, not so heavily horsepowered, not alot of memory, since the controller is doing most of the hard work. If it were possible to convert LAP's to AP's I bet they would run hot.

I've done it on a few models before I sell them. I figure anyone who needs a LAP can easily change them back. Never paid attention or hear about one mode running hotter than the other. I was always under the impression that APs run hot in normal conditions.

Running hot is normal - especially on the under side which is why the have the caution sign that says it is hot. The only difference between the 1141 LAP and AP are the software images.

They definitely run hot, hence the warning labels.

Oh man, I just wanted to make a topic because I'm seeing a AIR-LAP1142N-E-K9 offered up pretty nearby.
So, if I understand correctly, getting it to a standalone AP1142 would work, but it would become hot since it's doing a lot of tasks it wasn't made for?

Sufficient cooling - check. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks guys.... I ask because I have never had an AP get hot from normal use. I told him it was probably because of the conversion though.

I've received mine in the mean time, converted it to standalone, and have it running.

It is, in fact, not running hot at all. I do keep it in a cool space, but it's about the same temperature as the 3560 switch in the same room. I can't do a temperature check on the AP, but 'show env all' on the switch tells me it's running at 37°C.
