Is this like the same signal that Will Smith and company picked up in Independence Day?

Jeff Goldblum picked it up, Will Smith was too busy banging strippers.

interesting... just turn your satalight thingy to a soft music channel and turn it all the way down should avoid this symptom.... really interesting issue though

That sounds like data. When I was in the Navy we had to monitor certain frequencies and that is the sound of data going across RF.

TV People,

was your house built over an ancient Indian burial ground ?

your daughter is going to get sucked into the TV and
you'll have to go in a rescue her...

...that is, if you can find the exit

Could it be updates coming from the satellite provider?

I would guess something like this or a low level signal enough for the receiver to keep its signal and not have to re-acquire it each time its powered on.

Reminds me of Single-Side Band HF radio carrier that I used to hear when tuning across the short wave frequencies looking for radio amateur ("HAM") operators, international aircraft traffic, the BBC, VoA, Radio Moscow, whatever, in my pre-Internet youth of the 1960s.

So who you gonna call .... ?
