AUI ethernet port on Cisco 2501

Tue Apr 17, 2012 1:49 pm

I am quite a bit rusty from my days of networking. I am trying to setup my lab so I purchased 3 cisco 2501 to study for my CCNA, my question is? I have 2 serial interfaces and 1 AUI for ethernet on each router. How can I configure the Ethernet interface, if I don't see it on the configuration. From the CLI command I issue the command show ip int brief. But It only shows the 2 serials but no E0 interface. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

PS. I do have an Ethernet Transceiver connected to the AUI port on the router with a straight through cable going into a 2950 switch.

do you have link lights?

try a show run, do you see it there?

I do have a link light on the Transceiver as well as the Switch port that it is connected to. When I do a show run, it only displays the 2 serial interfaces. no Ethernet interface on the config.
I am at a loss.

Don't ask me why I actually have a 2501 lying around...

What does your "show version" say? Anything like this near the end?

Code: Select all
cisco 2500 (68030) processor (revision N) with 14336K/2048K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID 07071612, with hardware revision 00000000
Bridging software.
X.25 software, Version 3.0.0.
1 Ethernet/IEEE 802.3 interface(s)
2 Serial network interface(s)
32K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.
16384K bytes of processor board System flash (Read ONLY)

And what version of IOS do you have on there?

Ironically mine only says 2 serial interfaces, take a look below. Also what IOS version are you running?
BTW, I am sending a screen copy as an attachment, since my laptop is the one connected to the console.

This one here I have is running c2500-ik8os-l.122-19a.bin

If it's not showing in sh ver then either the image you have doesn't support ethernet (not likely) or the physical ethernet ports are broken and not being detected.

Interesting as I mentioned at the beginning of the string, I purchased 3 routers, Router 1 actually shows an Ethernet port, Routers 2 and 3 do not??? At this point I am not sure if this is a hardware issue or a software issue. Any help trying to troubleshoot will be greatly appreciated.
