Im looking for a new laptop to replace my aging desktops in my home office. My old laptop which killed over about a year ago was a Dell D620 and I loved it. I really dont trust any of the consumer laptops as they just seem like junk and working with support on them is like pulling teeth. I prefer business grade systems like the Dell Precision and am also looking at the Lenovo ThinkPad.

Id rather buy something used to save the money as I really dont need the newest, latest and greatest.

What is everyone's opinion and what do you use at work?

I'm a fan of the Dell Latitude series. I got a barely used E6410 on craigslist for $400. It works great. Love the docking station for my home office. Trying to get work to get me one of the new E6400's but they're being stingy.

Lenovo Thinkpad i5 running Windows 7 for work and a Sony Vaio i5 (one of the newer white ones) running Linux Mint for home. The Lenovo is great and has survived a few drops onto various data center floors. The Sony is nicer to use and looks better but shows every bit of muck and seems a lot more fragile

I bought my wife a Sony Vaio i5 a couple years back and she loves it. But on the other hand all she doe is Facebook and play Farmville :)

Im eyeing the Dell Latitude E5520 or the Lenovo ThinkPad T or X series. Does anyone out there use HP? I dont hear much about them.

I love the look and feel of MacBook Pros but I just dont like the OS.

If I could find something with linux I'd be set. That said I haven't looked.

Glancing through the specs lenovo is pretty Linux friendly. Looks like all hardware in the one I purchased is either supported natively or has support. I guess we will see when I get it.

I've run centos on a number of Lenovo's without any problems, love 'em.

I'm also a huge fan of panasonic toughbooks, they run linux and windows very well and have serial ports. I have a cf-53.

Lenovo's are great machines. Had one before. Just hard to justify the money for me. As of late I purchased an HP DV6z. Other than I want to (don't really need to) replace the 5400 RPM sata drive with an SSD it's been solid for me.

For personal use Im a cheep-ass and will never buy new. My lab ESX server is the only exception. I was able to get this Lenovo loaded up for almost half price on ebay. Cant really beat that.

Check out the lenovo outlet, if you're patient you can get some good deals and will often come with a 30 day warranty. I got netbook that runs ubuntu like a champ there and some other laptops for family members.
