"Network Engineer" vs "Senior Network Engineer"

Wed Oct 26, 2011 11:41 am

This may be a somewhat stupid question but other than the obvious which I assume is time, what classifies someone as a Network Engineer vs. a Senior Network Engineer.

What is a Senior Network Engineer supposed to know or should be able to do that a Network Engineer, in theory, might not be able to do or know?

work 24x7x365. mostly is design, the ability to work highly complicated network issues, and be the top tier level where all issues eventually get escalated to that can't be resolved. the ability to work solo, manage projects, get work done on time ( see first comment) all contribute to what a Senior Network Engineer does

I wouldn't get caught up in job titles, because they're pretty fluid.

Anyone else remember when network admin meant nothing else than a dedicated router switch guy?

Yep, job titles mean nothing. If both of those titles are at the same company I would assume the senior NE would be responsible for leading teams of NEs to complete projects. Be the go to guy for the junior NEs to ask questions. If those two job titles are at different companies their jobs could be identical. One place I worked used titles like the OPs, and another had Network Engineer and Network Technician. The Network Engineer was doing what a Senior NE did at the first place, and the Network Technician did what a Network Engineer did.

At the end of the day it is what you do day to day not the title that makes the job.

For me to attain the role of Senior I had to step up my leadership role. I had to become more of a liaison between upper management and the networking team. That and more network design. Technically the job is he same. Hope this helps!

In my experience the Sr Network Engineer's job involves playing video games and reading fan-fiction websites.

The Network Engineer works till 2am quite often and almost always has at least 1 12-16 hour day in a week. Did leave that job though :-P
