255 - network and broadcast = 253

Because 0 is a number. 0 to 255 = 256.

ok thanks. ive printed that workbook courtesy of my company ink and paper so il start working through it this afternoon :)
ive just learnt that il be starting my ccna course in 2 weeks time now instead of 2months time, so hopefully will give me a nice headstart.

Dude you have got to get subnetting under your belt before then.

thanks for your help, and the the author! i am working through the above pdf booklet and its seems to be clearing some things up. once i think i have the jist of it i will be sure to put time into the subnetting link at the top so i am confident with it. im lucky to have a job where i can spend a good few hours browsing the internet so il be sure to put that time to good use!

good news is can now work out subnet and broadcasts ip's, custom subnet masks, and find out network ranges.
seems to be in good time too as il be starting ccna at college this weeke probably. 3 hours a week in the classroom, i really cant wait!
teacher is well into cisco, i reckon he probably named his 1st born child cisco. now to keep practising and learning!

thanks for posting those links up from before. from looking at the working out its alot easier to work out what everything is, if you know what i mean! also good news is that the government are gonna pay for the first half of my coarse! very kind of them, i would feel a bit guilty as the uk is broke, but i dont cos its my tax money anyway! better than going to some bum who refuses to work and sits indoors drinking super tennants at 9am!

I agree you shouldn't feel guilty and should focus on giving back what you've received so far.

I can't wait to hear how the course is going. But knowing you've nutted out one of the first hurdles is awesome.
